Path: Study (explain · quiz · weekly plan)

Goal: Use AI as a tutor that checks understanding—not a ghostwriter; closed-notes explain is the bar.

Best for: Students and self-learners who want active recall, not pasted essays.

Explain and quiz to learn—not to submit ghostwritten work.

Scene tip: Phone voice note before paste—ghostwritten summaries fail the closed-notes quiz.

Why beginners skip this

Saving the study-path link feels finished—without explain→quiz→plan this week, nothing sticks.

Why this order

Explain first so the model critiques your gaps instead of feeding a summary to memorize; quiz while it still hurts; weekly plan last and only on materials you name.

Outcome + honesty

You can explain a topic in your own words, survive a short quiz, and follow a weekly plan built from files you actually have. If a course forbids AI for an assignment, follow that rule—no exceptions from this site.

  • study-explain-quiz-plan — the concrete loop
  • Pack B in prompts-copy-paste-packs — fill-ins
  • path-research — source tiers and evidence matrices when claims matter
  • foundations-when-ai-sounds-sure-but-wrong — before you trust a “citation”

Scene: exam week without ghostwriting

Sam has lec3-notes.md and problem-set-2.pdf. Sam asks AI to quiz one question at a time, then build a 5-day plan from those two files only. When the model offers “also watch these three YouTube intros,” Sam refuses and asks what is missing from the notes instead.

Example

Filled prompt

Honesty line (pin):
Help me learn. Do not write essays I could submit as my own graded work.
Quiz me, critique my explanations, and plan practice from my materials only.
If I ask you to “just write the assignment,” refuse and offer a study alternative.

What good output looks like

  • Calendar slot titled with slug for “Use AI as a tutor that checks your understanding—n”
  • Live artifact opened — not only the bookmark
  • Practice timed; refuse-line written
  • Pass/fail: artifact dated Asia/Shanghai

Choose one closed-notes assessment ahead. Session A: explain the topic aloud from memory for five minutes, then ask the model only for gaps—not a rewrite of your answer. Session B: generate a quiz from your notes; take it closed-notes; mark fails. Session C: plan the next study block only for failed items. If you cannot explain without looking, you have not learned it—ghostwritten paragraphs will not survive the room.

Save this card

Card: explain → quiz → plan. Closed-notes fail means back to explain—not ghostwrite.

Before you start

Create a 25-minute calendar block titled path-study. Open the live artifact for “Path: Study”—bookmark alone does not count. Guide: path-study. Keep the real job visible the whole time; a blank box means stop and fetch the artifact first.

Put the course outline and your own notes in reach. Decide the refuse line: “Do not write the essay body for me—quiz and critique only.” Timer on. Date the quiz score (Asia/Shanghai).

How to use this week

This week run explain → quiz → correct on one real concept along the path; no checkmark without a quiz.

Close the week by quoting aloud the refuse line you actually used once. If you cannot, rerun Practice now and date the pass/fail (Asia/Shanghai).

Close the loop

Write one line: next time I only save the path with no quiz, I refuse the checkmark.

Example

Filled prompt

Wed study: explain "recursion" 90s voice → 5-quiz notes closed.
Ghostwritten summary = fail. No invented reading list.
Context: real workstream this week (Asia/Shanghai). Name actual files/people.
Constraints: no invented metrics/owners/prices; label Unknowns; stop before send/delete/pay.
Done check: I can mark pass/fail in one minute on the output.

Red flags + refusal script

Ghostwriting for closed-notes; skipping explain→quiz—quiz fail means not learned.

Pitfalls

PitfallFix
Letting AI write the essay you submitExplain/quiz only; you write; follow school rules
Skipping the self-testQuiz yourself from notes before rereading
Treating fluency as understandingTeach-back to a friend
  • Asking for a full essay draft the night before a closed-notes exam.
  • Quizzing open-notes and calling it mastery.
  • Skipping the explain-aloud step because typing feels faster.
  • Saving model summaries instead of a plan that targets your fails.

Practice now

Interleave: mix two topics in today’s quiz (Asia/Shanghai).

Active recall: close notes; write three points from memory (Asia/Shanghai).

Feynman gap: note the first place teach-back failed (Asia/Shanghai).

Spaced line: schedule one revisit date Asia/Shanghai on Save (Asia/Shanghai).

Teach-back drill: 30s teach-back to empty chair; note the stumble word (Asia/Shanghai).

Study-path drill: explain one concept aloud 60s; quiz yourself with three questions you write first (Asia/Shanghai).

Thin-spot drill: rewrite the Save card with real nouns from your work (repo, doc, inbox). Generic placeholders fail the drill.

Tonight run explain → quiz → correct on one real concept; no checkmark without a quiz.

Reality check: after Practice now, write one sentence you will refuse next time—and keep it on the Save card dated Asia/Shanghai.

Today card (copy) — path-study: 1. Artifact I will produce: ___ 2. Pass/fail check: ___ 3. Refuse-line if tempted to skip verify/send: ___ (date: Asia/Shanghai) 4. One never-do from this guide: ___

Extra pass: do the card on a real file today—reading alone does not count.

One sentence takeaway

Explain → quiz → correct; no checkmark without a quiz.

Word-floor practice

Run the Today card once on a real artifact. Write pass/fail + never-do with date Asia/Shanghai. If you only skimmed, do not mark this guide done.
