How to choose ChatGPT, Claude, or Grok

Goal: pick a default tool for this task in under two minutes—without chasing every model launch.

Free to read: free. No signup on iswarp.

Model names, free limits, and plan names change often. Treat this page as a capability map (what kind of job fits which tool), not a permanent ranking or a quota sheet. For today’s free caps, open the vendor’s own pricing/help page. When unsure, run the same prompt twice (protocol below) and keep the answer that needs less editing.

One paid plan rarely wins every row. Many people keep one everyday default and open a second tool only when the task row says so.

Free vs paid (practical, not a price list)

As of late 2026, free tiers still rotate: which model you get, how many messages, and which extras (projects, voice, connectors) stay gated. Paid plans mostly buy higher limits and sticky features—not a permanent “always smarter” badge. This page does not invent quotas, dollar amounts, or API rate limits; open each vendor’s own pricing/help page for what free includes today.

  • Spend one week of real work on free before you pay.
  • Upgrade only when a limit blocks your workflow (not because a launch post scared you).
  • Workplace or client data → use org-managed plans, not personal free chats.
  • Before buying: confirm current free limits on the official page yourself. Soft rule: if you cannot name the limit you hit this week, you are not ready to pay. iswarp never invents fee tables.

“Same prompt twice” protocol (10 minutes)

Use this before you add a second subscription—or whenever Twitter says your default is “dead.”

  1. Pick one real task from last week (email, notes, study question).
  2. Write one prompt with Goal / Context / Format / Boundaries. Freeze it.
  3. Run it in Tool A and Tool B without editing the prompt.
  4. Score 1–5: correctness · usable structure · minutes to edit.
  5. Keep the winner as default for that task type only.
Task type: [email rewrite / meeting actions / study quiz]
Success: I can use ≥70% after ≤5 minutes of edits.
Do not invent facts. Mark guesses with [?].
Run identical prompt on Tool A and Tool B.

What “live” means (Grok and search)

Live web / X signal is useful for public conversation. It is not a court stamp. Ask for a time window, confirmed vs rumored, and links you open yourself. ChatGPT and Claude with search need the same click-through habit.

Decision cheat sheet

Need one everyday default? → ChatGPT (or whatever your team already uses)
Need careful long-form or code review? → Claude
Need “what’s happening on X / right now”? → Grok, then verify
Job or school stakes? → Honesty rules first; tool second
Unsure? → Same prompt, two tools, keep the edit-friendlier answer
